How do we do cutting-edge research that quickly transitions to the entrepreneurial sector? This is an experiment that we have been doing in my research group since 2003, and I will share some of our experiences. By way of example, I will describe how we are using non-dilutive government funding to develop a mid-infrared fiber laser (MIRFL) that is now being transitioned to the Department of Defense for use on helicopters to protect against shoulder-held, heat-seeking missiles. Looking beyond the military applications into potential commercial markets, we are exploring the use of the MIRFL in broadband fiber-to-the-home and in bio-medical applications for detecting atherosclerosis or heart attacks, which is the number one killer of people in the US.
